Licensing
People wishing to make copies of, or produce ASC scripts have a legal obligation to obtain permission to do so from the relevant rightsholder. The ASC works diligently to protect plays against unauthorised use. At the same time, we recognise that negotiating rights can be confusing. To simplify the process for both playwrights and users, the ASC issues licences on application for the copying and, in many cases, also the production of plays in its catalogue.
The ASC also enters into licensing agreements with various suppliers for the distribution and sale of Australian theatrical works through australianplays.org
Enquiries about licensing may be directed to admin@ozscript.org.
Photocopying
Purchasing an ASC script in digital format allows the purchaser to print one copy only; further copies require a copy licence. Educators and others in institutions covered by a Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) licence should note that their CAL licence only allows them to copy up to 10% of the work.
The ASC is authorised to collect and distribute photocopy licence fees on behalf of playwrights represented in its catalogue. An ASC photocopy licence may be purchased as an optional extra when purchasing the script through australianplays.org. Alternatively, you may order a licence at any time by completing and returning the photocopy licence form.
Copy licence options:
- Single - allows you to make an additional copy - $6.00
- Small cast - allows you to make up to 5 copies - $30.00
- Standard - allows you to make up to 10 copies - $48.00
- Class set - allows you to make 10+ copies (max 30) - $120.00
Productions
The ASC welcomes all production enquiries and assists in various ways with production licensing. For certain plays in the catalogue, the ASC is authorised to issue production licences for school and amateur productions. For all other plays, when production enquiries are received, we assist by facilitating direct communication between producers and playwrights or their agents.
Playwrights interested in the ASC’s production licensing service can find more information in the Playwrights Hub.
Distribution
Through its distribution arm, australianplays.org, the ASC distributes playscripts and supporting materials in various formats for a range of suppliers. We distribute on a non-exclusive basis. Publishing partners may elect to upload their own titles and content directly or send it to us for upload. We welcome enquiries from theatrical publishers, theatre companies, agents and others interested in making works available through the most comprehensive e-commerce portal for Australian performance writing. Enquiries about distribution to director@ozscript.org.
