Chris Edmund

Chris Edmund began his career in London where he directed for the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, the Riverside Studios and the Kings Head. In 1985 he moved to Australia to take up the position of Head of Directing at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He has been dramaturg and director for the Australian National Playwrights’ Conference, and Visiting Fellow at the National University of Singapore. He taught a series of classes at the Gaiety School, Dublin, and directed ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ for Middlesex University, London. His production of ‘The Pillars of Society’ was performed at the International Theatre School Festival in Amsterdam.

In August 2000 he directed the highly successful premiere of his own play, ‘Paradise’, in Sydney. (‘Paradise’ has been published by playscripts.com in the USA.) In January 2001 he directed ‘Redemption’ for the Perth International Arts Festival. ‘Redemption’ was also performed in 2002 at the 6th Cultura Inglesa Festival, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Chris directed an adaptation for ABC Radio in July 2001.

In April 2002 he directed ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ for the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In March 2007 he returned to Hong Kong to direct ‘The Cherry Orchard’. In 2003 he presented the world premiere of his controversial play ‘The Devil’s Tunic’. In 2004 he wrote and directed a short film ‘Bang on the Head’ and directed ‘Crave’ for Black Swan BSX Company. He recently visited Buenos Aires to research a new play about the tango, ‘The Butcher’s Dance’. His latest play, ‘Before I Get Old’, premiered in 2006.
