AUSTRALIAN GOTHIC
Clair, an activist and nurse, is being held without charge as she is interrogated by ASIO officer August. Clair's parents, Sonya and Erich, are aging East German immigrants still haunted by life behind the wall. Set in contemporary Orwellian Australia, this play is a fable of tyranny masquerading as protection. It examines the tension between civil liberties and national security, from Hitler's 1933 Enabling Act to the recent introduction of new laws in Australia.
Despite history's lessons, Australian Gothic suggests that government-driven fear is still a dominant method of social control, and is capable of paralysing our most intimate relationships.
